DIY Cute Sunflower Milk Bath Photo shoot with Baby

Pinterest has inspired me to try a DIY milk bath photo shoot. I’ve always loved milk bath photos, especially for babies. For a while I kept telling myself to wait until Everly was a little older and could sit up by herself, but Harris Teeter had sunflowers on sale, so I decided just to try it out…and I am so glad I did.

I would like to start out by saying that I am not a photographer, and I have no photography experience, I just love taking pictures. However, I do have a great camera that my parents got me for mother’s day this year… I know, it’s weird that my parents got me a mother’s day gift. I had just had Everly a few days before mother’s day and they were excited for me. She is their first grandchild. I have a Canon M50. I love it so much. It takes amazing photos and is relatively inexpensive.

What You Will Need for the Milk Bath Photoshoot

  • 10- 12 Sun Flowers
  • Some greenery
  • A well-lit white bathtub, or a galvanized bucket, and an overcast day.
  • White towel to drape over a baby bath if your baby cannot sit up on its own. ( Kohl’s has cheap towels)
  • White washcloth to cover up your baby’s private parts. (Kohl’s have cheap towels)
  • Camera or cell phone camera.
  • High-fat milk – I used heavy cream because I had it in the fridge and was not going to use it.
  • A baby bath if your baby cannot sit up on its own.

How to Prepare the Bath

First, you will start by preparing the flowers. Cut the flowers so that there is about 2 inches of a stem left. This will help the flowers float and not tip over. Next prepare the greenery. Pluck the leaves from the stems and gather them together. Once all of the flowers have been prepared, you will want to start preparing the bath.

Start the bath by filling it up with warm water (normal bath temperature). Add your baby bath if you are using it, and cover it with a white towel. Once bath is filled to the desired amount, add milk to the bath. I used a pint of heavy cream, and it worked perfectly. If you are used whole milk, you will want to add around 4 cups, or until the bath turns white.

Once the bath is white, Add your flowers one by one making sure you are placing the stems are in the water so that they float nicely. Space out the flowers so that they are evenly spread out around the entire bath. Add your greenery by placing it in the white space where there are no flowers.

Next, you will want to add baby. Place baby in the center of the bath. Cover up your baby’s private parts with a small white washcloth. Begin snapping pictures. If you are brave, you will let your little one hold a flower. It makes for cute pictures, but beware, they will try to eat the flower.

Tips & Tricks for Great Photos

  • Make sure you plan to take the pictures right after your baby has woken up from a nap and has a full belly. This is when your baby will be the happiest.
  • Take a lot of pictures. You will have to take a ton of pictures to get a few good ones. I probably took 60-70 pictures and got about 10-12 good ones.
  • Edit your photos. I use my iPhone to edit all of my photos. If you click on the edit button in the upper right-hand corner, you can adjust the lighting and colors of the photo. I also use the airbrush app. My favorite filter is called Glossy under the Horoscope group. I also use the eyebright tool to make my baby’s eyes pop. I also use the eyebright tool over the nose and mouth to make all of her features pop.
