DIY Dollar Store Fall Knit Pumpkins

Easy Fall Decorations Using Items from the Dollar Tree

I LOVE the Dollar Tree. You can find so many great things there, and it is great for people who are up for some DIY crafts. They now have their fall items in and I am very excited. We have lived in our house for about 2 years now, only 1 fall, and we are still accumulating fall decorations. If you know me, I am not one to spend a ton of money on decorating. I furnished my whole house off Facebook Market Place. Anyways, I am always down to DIY and I am very excited about these fall knit pumpkins I made.

What You Need For These $3 Dollar Pumpkins

These pumpkins are soo cute and only cost 3 dollars to make. You can find everything you need at the Dollar Tree (minus the wine cork).

What you need to buy:

  • Foam Pumpkins
  • 2 Things of Yarn in the Color of Your Choice.
  • A floral piece with green leaves on it. You can just buy one thing of flowers and pull the leaves off to use for each pumpkin.

What you will need from home:

  • A knife or something sharp to poke a medium-sized hole in the top and the bottom of the pumpkins. I used a potato peeler so that the whole would be somewhat round.
  • A pair of scissors.
  • Wine corks or twigs of similar size to act as the stem of the pumpkins.
What you need for these diy fall knit pumpkins

1. Start by Removing the Stem and Making a Whole at Each End

To begin, you will need to first remove the stem of the pumpkin. They are easy to remove, they are just stuck in by a toothpick. Once the stem is removed, use your knife or potato peeler to cut 2 whole that are the same size.

2. Begin Cutting and Braiding Your Yarn.

For this pumpkin, I choose to braid the yard, but there are many different things you could try. I did small braids for this pumpkin. At first, I will admit I regretted the choice to do small braids because it took a little longer than expected, but the small braids look so cute and I am happy with the finishing product.

You will want to start by cutting 9, 16in strands of yarn. Tie a knot at the top of the yarn and begin braiding all of the way down. Tie another knot at the end of the braid. I started by doing 5 braids at a time and then placing them in my pumpkin. Total, I think I had over 70 braided strands of yarn.

If you do bigger braids, it will take less time. I am working on a white pumpkin with braids that are 3x as big and it is taking me a lot less time. I will post pictures of that pumpkin once it is done. ( you may need more yarn if you do bigger braids)

3. Adding the Yarn to the Pumpkin

Now, you can start adding your braided pieces to your pumpkin. You can either do a few at a time or braid all of the yarn and add it at the end. All you need to do is poke the yarn knot through the hole and the top, then pull the other end to the bottom of the pumpkin and poke the other knot through the bottom hole. The yarn should stay on its own, you should not need to glue it. However, if you are having trouble getting it to stay, you can always add a little hot glue. Just be careful, because it will make it harder to add the stem on top at the end.

4. Adding Your Leaves & Stem

By now, the hole in the top of the pumpkin should almost be closed. There should be just enough room to squish the cork and the leaves down in it. I first placed the cork on top of the leaves and pushed them down together. After that, your pumpkin is finished.

Comment below and let me know how your pumpkins turned out. I will be making some more in different colors and different styles. I will share them when they are done. Happy Fall Everyone!
